A unique blend of Surfing and Waterskiing that’s Kite Surfing. Invented by the French it requires plenty of water and strong winds to create the basic ingredients for an experience of a lifetime, add a beach and a great dollop of sunshine then you have all the ingredients to make a thrilling experience for the extreme sports seeker.

Kitesurfing or kiteboarding is an adventure surface water sport that has been described as combining wakeboarding, windsurfing, surfing, paragliding, and gymnastics all rolled into one extreme sureface water kickass sport.

Kitesurfing basicially uses the power of the wind to propel you across the water on a small surfboard. Kitesurfing has a number of styles, including, freestyle, freeride, downwinders, speed, course racing, wakestyle, jumping, and wave riding which about kitesurfing big waves using a directional board similar to a surfboard.

The first weekend of the RYA Olympic Classes National Ranker, held at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy on the 22nd and 23rd of September saw the British Kitesurfing Association, BKSA. The racing got underway in a steady 12-14 knots with great sunshine on Saturday with all of the classes.

So if you’re interested in experiencing the thrills of Kite Surfing - "How do I get started?"

You can learn by yourself, and many have.  You can probably to learn how to do most things but to be fair you really ought to take some lessons and learn how to get the best out of a kite you’ve just bought.

You may be excited about the idea of taking your kite across the water and let nauture take its course, what you haven't realised is that you're going to be attached to a board that just take you by surprise and combined with the power of those gusts of winds and sweel of the water could well be a tad more powerful than you can handle. Without any skills and previous training you’re going to soon be in trouble or injure yourself.

It's not that kitesurfing is ultra dangerous, when your strapped to surfboard and skating on water with a sail its all unfamilliar territory and in the hands of inexperienced people that’s when accidents occur.

The same could be said for taking an Aston Martin without a driving licence and going out for a drive in the rain and windy conditions?  Same for kitesurfing. Kiting, like driving a fast and powerfull car, can be dangerous if you don't respect it and don’t understand the forces at work they combination of wind and water its essential you gain the basic skills and take a gradual introduction to the sport to make it reasonably safe and thrilling. The advantage of getting lessons is that they can gradually introduce you to the power of a kite.
