As long as the wind and wave conditions form the right mix, just about any island in Hawaii will work for the wind-powered water sport of kite surfing. A cross between windsurfing and wakeboarding, kite surfing in Hawaii takes several forms, depending on skill level. Beginners should kite surf first through a rental shop that provides lessons, while those with advanced kiteboarding skills can head out to popular kite surfing spots.

Kailua Beach Park

When kite surfing in Hawaii, Kailua Beach Park is noted for having the best all-around conditions. According to the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, Kailua attracts amateur and professional kiteboarders from all over the world because of its ideal east-northeast trade winds. Located on Oahu’s windward coast, Kailua Beach Park is on the southern end of Kailua Bay. The city park has a grass area for staging kites and a sandy beach for launching. Trade winds average about 16 knots in the summer and 12 to 25 knots year-round. White buoys mark the swimming area where kitesurfers are prohibited. Other popular activities in Kailua Beach Park are windsurfing, boogie boarding, kayaking, swimming, beach volleyball and picnicking. About a block away is Kailua Sailboards and Kayak shop, which rents kiteboards rentals and offers lessons. Kailua Beach Park 526 Kawailoa Rd. Kailua, HI 96734 808-233-7300 honolulu.gov
Kite Beach

On the north shore of Maui sits Kite Beach, a prime spot for kite surfing, according to the Maui Kiteboarding Association (MKA). The beach, part of Kanaha Beach Park, is divided into two areas. Beginners and intermediate kiteboarders surf NASKA or Action Beach, which is also used by kite surfing schools and rental shops for lessons. The strong, steady winds that blow parallel to shore and the wide sandy area makes the beach a good launching point. More advanced kite surfers launch off Ka’a Point, also referred to as Pro-beach, which MKA indicates as the best known kiteboarding beach in the world. The protected cove with its flat water allows kite surfers to come up close to the beach. The choppy waters in the middle area make for a good ride. Kiteboarding is not allowed before 11 a.m. on any areas of Kite Beach. Kanaha Beach Park Amala Place Kahului, HI 96732 808-270-7389
Hilo Bay

On the Big Island, Hilo Bay is a popular spot for kite surfing. Located on the east side of the island, the area is part of the Hilo Bay Watershed that covers over 463,000 acres. Most kiteboarding here occurs during the afternoon when the northerly winds come in. Other recreational activities on Hilo Bay are windsurfing, fishing, kayaking, scuba diving, surfing and swimming.
